Asymmetrical Girl

I have officially met my design/author hero :) The designer of numerous covers, he brought Batmanga to the mainstream, the author of Cheese Monkeys...I present Chip Kidd. I have to admit I had no clue he was making a goofy face, as such I giggle everytime I see it.

After reading his Cheese Monkeys book I was instilled with a quote that has ever since kept me designing. Whenever I get stuck on a design, a client looks and goes eh I "opposite of like" that,...I have one thought in mind-

Never fall in love with an idea. They're whores. If the one you've got isn't doing its job there is always, always, always another.

It was great to meet Chip Kidd and realize that not only is he a great designer, he's also hilarious! If ever you get a chance to meet him, I'd highly suggest going to do so. Between photos of japaneese Batman and a tank, his enthusiastic and very theatrical readings from Japanese Batman comics he translated, his trials to use a fortune cookie on a book cover (he found himself thinking...where would I see this phrase in life? a fortune cookie!!), and his midlife crisis band. The show is fantastic.

Things I learned from Chip Kidd aside from the fact that he a triple threat (sings, dances and designs! see Assymettrical Girl) He also finds it hilarious everytime he thinks of the section in Cheese Monkeys where the cat gets water poured on it for gestural drawings. There is proof that I'm not the only demented one that finds cat water torture? hilarious.

If you're interested in Chip Kidd, here is his site.

FAIL! better luck next time

Between insurance companies, kinkos and a bit of sarcasm...well, what could make a day more of a fail? I can't think of anything.

FAIL #1 Thinking an insurance company could be useful on the phone.

I should have seen the red flags when it took Blue Cross Blue Shield a week to email me. I mean really they even have BS in it's initials (coincidence...i think not). Anyways, so I figure it's been since December and I've heard nothing new on my dental.

*play hold music...elevator tunes...*
Enter grouchy insurance person. womp womp womp womp womp womp womp.
Me: *confused* didn't I already answer all these questions on the application?
Insurance person: womp womp womp womp womp.
Me: oh how lovely...you do not see my application.
Insurance person: womp womp womp womp womp has it been at least 2-4 weeks, because if it hasn't your womp womp womp won't even show up womp womp womp.
Me: oh.
Insurance person: womp womp womp anything else?
Me: not unless you can expedite my dental insurance...no? ok later.

May as well have talked to a wall for that conversation. Inanimate objects may have been more helpful.

FAIL #2 Phone call from Kinkos

Kinkos: Hi...we can't find your file to print.
Me: You mean the one I dropped off last week? Because I still need those 1200 invitations by noon.
Kinkos: Yes. Can you resend it. We usually do not use files.
Me: (UGH!) Sure, it i can find it.

FAIL #3 ME!!!
So I might have just forwarded the file from my friend...without looking at the subject line. Turned out it said "Kinkos Sucks!!!" Let me tell you, that has to be the best way to get your project done quickly I've ever thought up.

3 strikes and I'm out! better luck next time :)

First week as an "adult"

First week as an "adult"...which i'm defining as my first week of work as a post-graduate...non-surprisingly feels very much like working before graduating. Pluses? Now I don't have homework to come home too.

As for "new year new me"...well nobody's perfect.

I am exercising more...not daily, but at least 3x a week. Also, I was eating healthy until thursday. Thursday I totally ODed on rieces pieces...those m&m shaped ones. I ate a bag made for at least 8 people lol and finished it off with bufallo wild wings and mixed drinks. But other than that one major side track...I'm doing pretty good. Now to keep me out of those candies I am bribing myself. Bribery=DVD of Little Mermaid. Hey, whatever works right? So far so good. If i can keep it up 2 weeks...I get my DVD :)

Well, I'll keep you posted!

New Year...New me.

Like every other american this year I'm starting a new year with a new resolution. Being healthy. So far I've even gotten myself to the gym to run 30 minutes. Today, I'm going to try to run longer. I realize this is not the most exciting blog, but, I figure if I tell the world what I'm up too perhaps I'll feel more apt to stay on track.

To the gym I go!
